Frequently Asked Questions

Housing, safety and supervision

Where will students live?

In UNC residence halls on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The exact residence hall will be decided in spring 2027 with UNC Housing and Conference Services.

How secure are the residence halls?

Only students and staff with a key can enter. Each student gets a room key and a building fob, and room doors lock automatically when closed. Common areas and building entrances are monitored by video. Floors are separated by gender, with at least one Outset adult staff member living on each floor.

Who supervises students in the evenings and overnight?

An Outset Camp Director and Assistant Director lead a team of Outset residential counselors, typically current UNC college students. The counselors and the Assistant Director live in the residence hall and the Camp Director lives nearby. All staff are available 24/7, the staff-to-student ratio is about 1:8, and every residential staff member passes a full background check and is trained by Outset.

How are students supervised?

Students are placed in counselor groups and are supervised by Outset staff at all times. Under UNC policy, students may not go anywhere on campus without an Outset staff member. Students learn the campus boundaries at orientation and wear their lanyard at all times.

Meals

Where do students eat?

Breakfast is at UNC's Chase Dining Hall, buffet-style with a range of options. Lunch and snacks are served at Kenan-Flagler during the academic day. Dinners are at Chase Dining Hall or catered from local restaurants.

Can dietary restrictions and allergies be accommodated?

The university can accommodate many special dietary needs on request, though options may be limited for some restrictions. Please list all allergies and dietary needs on the health form. We cannot guarantee the complete absence of any particular allergen on or off campus.

Can students order food delivery?

No. Uber Eats, DoorDash, Postmates and other delivery apps are not permitted.

Health and medication

How does Outset look after student health?

Staff check on students' physical and emotional well-being throughout the week. A student who feels unwell is evaluated by Outset leadership. In a medical emergency, staff call 911, go with the student to the hospital and stay until a parent arrives. Please list all medical information on the health form, including injuries, allergies and mental health needs.

How are medications handled?

All medications, vitamins and supplements must be declared in advance and handed to Outset staff at check-in, in their original packaging with a current prescription label and dosage. Staff store them securely and give them at the correct times. Medication that is not in its original packaging cannot be given.

Can students carry emergency medication?

Yes. With parent permission, EpiPens, rescue inhalers and insulin stay with the student, provided the student can self-administer. Staff are told who carries emergency medication and where it is kept.

Are over-the-counter medications available?

Outset leadership keep general over-the-counter medications for the evenings and overnight. Parents approve which ones their student may take, on the health form or in writing by email. (During the academic day, Academy leadership keep their own; approvals for those go on the health forms in CampDoc.)

When will Outset contact a parent about a health concern?

When a student needs medical evaluation or treatment; when a medication or care decision needs consent; when illness limits participation; when an injury goes beyond basic first aid; when symptoms persist or worsen; in an emergency; when a contagious illness may require isolation; when a mental health concern arises; when a student misses more than about half a day; or when the student asks us to call home.

Arrival and departure

When and where is check-in?

Check-in is on Sunday from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the assigned UNC residence hall; the exact address will be sent before the program. Staff greet you at an outdoor table, where students receive their name tag, keys and welcome materials and hand in any medications at the healthcare table. Parents may walk through check-in, but for safety reasons adults are not allowed inside the residence halls.

Can we arrive early?

There is no early check-in, and Outset provides no meals, programming or supervision before check-in begins. We may be able to store bags, but students manage their own time until check-in.

When is check-out?

Friday at 2:00 p.m., when the Academy day ends. The check-out location (the residence hall or the Kenan-Flagler building) will be confirmed before the program. Parents or guardians collecting a student show a photo ID and must be listed as an authorised pickup person. For a student to sign themselves out, email the Camp Director in advance to authorise self-departure in writing.

Does Outset offer airport transportation?

Yes, to and from RDU airport only, at $50 each way; ask your Outset point of contact.

  • Arrival: flights must land at RDU by 4:00 p.m. ET on Sunday. Group pickups begin at 1:00 p.m.; students who land earlier wait at the airport. You will receive the pickup staff member's name and phone number 2–3 days before the program.
  • Delays: if a flight lands after 4:00 p.m. or is rebooked, take an Uber, Lyft or taxi to campus and text the staff number you were given with your arrival time.
  • Departure: flights must leave RDU after 4:30 p.m. ET on Friday (the Academy ends at 2:00 p.m.). Outset aims to arrive two hours before the flight. Outset cannot provide housing if a Friday flight is cancelled.
  • Unaccompanied minors: Outset generally cannot accommodate airline unaccompanied-minor services. Check with your airline and contact the Camp Director before booking.
Can students drive themselves?

We discourage it. Outset cannot provide or arrange parking, and long-term parking in Chapel Hill is very limited; you may contact UNC Transportation & Parking directly. Students who drive must hand their keys to Outset staff on arrival, sign an additional waiver, and cannot use their car until 2:00 p.m. on Friday unless cleared for early departure.

Can a student leave early?

Only when signed out with staff and accompanied by an authorised adult. For a family or medical emergency, contact the Camp Director to arrange departure.

Can I send mail or a care package?

Mail cannot be received on campus. Parents may drop off items or pre-written notes at check-in, labelled with the student's name and the day to deliver them.

Living on campus

How are roommates assigned?

Students meet their roommate at check-in. A roommate request on the housing form is honoured if both students request each other and a double room is available. Otherwise students are paired with a roommate of the same gender, occasionally in a triple.

Can I request a single room?

Single rooms cost an additional $400, are first-come, first-served and are not guaranteed. Request one on the housing form; if it is approved you will receive a payment link, and payment confirms the room. The $400 fee also applies when a single room is medically necessary.

What if a key or fob is lost?

There is a $60 fee per lost key; if the student cannot pay on site, a parent will be contacted. Repeated lockouts may incur a university lockout fee. Outset provides lanyards to keep keys secure.

What are the expectations for living in the residence hall?

Respect roommates' space, belongings and sleep; keep rooms and shared spaces clean; honour quiet hours; and keep hallways and exits clear. Students may not visit hallways or rooms other than their own. Roommate or living issues should be raised early with a counselor or the Camp Director.

Is Outset or Kenan-Flagler responsible for lost items?

No. Please label belongings and leave valuables at home. Students move their own things in and out of the residence hall, as adults cannot enter the buildings.

Rules and policies

Is there a code of conduct?

Yes. Students and parents acknowledge the Code of Conduct before arrival. Serious violations can lead to immediate dismissal without refund, with a parent responsible for early pickup.

What can lead to immediate dismissal?
  • Bullying, harassment, hazing or derogatory language, or failing to report it
  • Physically or sexually aggressive touching
  • Photographing, recording or posting other participants without permission
  • Possessing or being under the influence of alcohol, tobacco, vapes, drugs or weapons
  • Leaving the program area without permission or staff supervision
  • Violating a UNC code, policy or regulation
How are behaviour issues handled?

Responses are fair and proportionate: informal redirection, then a reflective conversation or warning, a behaviour plan, parent notification, and dismissal if needed. Some incidents must also be reported to UNC's Protection of Minors Office, which can remove a student from the program.

What is the cell phone policy?

Students may bring a phone and use it respectfully. Phones are put away whenever instructions are being given, a staff member is speaking, or students are walking in crowded areas.

Is there a dress code in the evenings?

In the residence halls and at evening activities, dress is casual but neat and appropriate: no clothing referencing alcohol, drugs, profanity or sexual content, and nothing that exposes undergarments. (Kenan-Flagler sets its own dress code for the academic day.)

What to pack for the residential option
